The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has sent a 17-man team to Accra for a friendly tournament against Ghana’s Black Bombers at the Accra Sports Stadium, with president Hon. Wale Edun urging them to proudly represent Nigeria.

Edun delivered his message to the national amateur squad at their training camp in Lagos on Monday, ahead of the bout scheduled for Thursday. The NBF president called on the boxers to approach the assignment with the full weight of national responsibility, emphasising that the rivalry between the two West African countries demands nothing less than total commitment regardless of the friendly nature of the contest.

I want you all to be conscious of our national flag which you carry you must do so with pride. The rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana has no exception; despite being a friendly match, you must fight for the pride of our nation.”

Apart from the spirit of international competition, the tournament is also very important for strategic reasons.

The bilateral fixture has been structured as a key performance assessment platform, giving both the Nigerian and Black Bombers coaching teams an opportunity to evaluate their boxers’ readiness ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Black Bombers contingent, operating under the technical direction of seasoned head coach Ofori Asare, fields a strong but experienced boxers across both the male and female categories.

Eight boxers in total will represent the Black Bombers, competing across weight divisions that span from the 54kg female category to the 80kg male super welterweight class.

Team Nigeria’s 17-man squad includes boxers, coaches, and technical officials, showing a well-organized team built for strong performance and smooth coordination during the trip.
