Carlos Queiroz, one of football’s most seasoned and globally travelled coaches, stepped onto Ghanaian soil on Tuesday, 22 April 2026, as he will formally commenced his tenure as head coach of the Black Stars. His arrival in Accra marks the opening chapter of an assignment that carries the weight of an entire country’s World Cup ambitions.

The Appointment

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician has been handed a four-month contract, a timeframe that speaks plainly to the task at hand, to deliver results at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz arrives with a blueprint drawn from decades of elite coaching experience, and Ghana expects that experience to translate swiftly into the Black Stars Squad.

His formal introduction to Ghanaians is scheduled for Thursday, 24 April, at 1:00 PM, when the Ghana Football Association will host an unveiling press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

At that Unveiling, the new head coach is expected to explain his tactical philosophy, preferred formation, outline his immediate priorities, criteria for call-ups and set the tone for the months of preparation that precede the tournament in June.

Queiroz will not be working in isolation. The veteran coach has brought with him a trusted assistants, headlined by South African Roger De Sa, a long-standing right-hand man whose presence signals continuity and cohesion within the backroom staff.

Three additional staff members will join the technical team, adding a support structure that have international experience across multiple tournaments.

Queiroz inherits a squad previously managed by Otto Addo, whose second stint in charge of the Black Stars concluded with a series of underwhelming results in last month international friendlies against Austria in Vienna and Germany in Stuttgart, scoring twice and conceding seven goals.

He is expected to work with likes of Manchester City forward, Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams of Atletic Bilbao, Leicester City striker, Jordan Ayew who have been relegated to League one, Villarreal Midfielder, Thomas Partey, Hearts Of Oak Goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare etc.

The incoming coach brings a résumé that few in African football management can match. His tenure in charge of the Iranian national team during which he steered the side to consecutive World Cup appearances, registering 61 victories from 100 matches at a points-per-game rate of 2.09 , which defines the type of work he did with the Iranian National Team. His earlier assignments at some of the most prestigious clubs includes: assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United across two separate spells, head coach of Real Madrid, and manager of the Portuguese national side.

 

More recently, Queiroz guided Colombia between 2019 and 2020 and led Egypt through their 2021–2022 qualifying campaign, a stint during which the Pharaohs averaged an impressive 2.05 points per match across 20 outings, capturing 13 wins.

The Black Stars, historically one of Africa’s most formidable countries at the World Cup, will be determined to recapture their form they exhibited at 2006 World Cup in Germany and 2010 World Cup in South Africa
