Red Cards Define South Africa’s World Cup Return as Mexico Prevail in WC Opener

Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in a fiery Group A opener at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

The hosts made an early breakthrough when Julian Quiñones punished a South African mistake in the ninth minute, capitalizing on a turnover deep inside Bafana Bafana territory after intense Mexican pressure.

South Africa struggled to settle into the contest as Mexico continued to create chances, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several key saves to keep the deficit at one heading into halftime.

Hosts Take Control

Any hopes of a South African comeback suffered a major blow shortly after the restart when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Mexico took full advantage of their numerical superiority and doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Raúl Jiménez, who calmly headed home from close range from Roberto Alvarado’s inviting cross.

The situation worsened for Bafana Bafana when winger Themba Zwane was also sent off with six minutes remaining, reducing the African side to nine men.

Mexico defender César Montes was later dismissed as well, taking the total number of red cards in the match to three.

Historic Night at Azteca

The encounter became the first World Cup opening game in history to produce three send-offs, adding another layer of drama to an already intense occasion.

The victory sends Mexico to the top of Group A and extends El Tri’s unbeaten run in World Cup opening matches to eight games, comprising six wins and two draws.

For South Africa, their first World Cup appearance since 2010 ended in disappointment, leaving them under pressure to secure a positive result against the Czech Republic in their next group fixture to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.
