Wembanyama Race Against Time for NBA Awards Eligibility After Injury Scare
Victor Wembanyama is facing a crucial late-season battle to remain eligible for the NBA’s top individual honours after being forced out of action in the San Antonio Spurs 115-102 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The French star exited the game shortly before halftime following a collision with Paul George during a fast break, raising immediate concerns over his fitness with only a handful of regular-season games remaining.
While the full extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, the timing could have significant implications beyond the Spurs’ campaign.
Under the NBA’s revised eligibility rules, players must feature in at least 65 games, each with a minimum of 20 minutes played, to qualify for major end-of-season awards, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Exceptions allow for two games with reduced minutes between 15 and 20, but only within strict limits.
Wembanyama currently sits just short of that threshold.
Including appearances in the NBA Cup Finals which contribute to the overall tally, he has registered 62 games with at least 20 minutes played, alongside two additional games above the 15-minute mark. This leaves him on 64 qualifying appearances.
As a result, the 20-year-old must play at least 20 minutes in one of the Spurs’ remaining three fixtures to meet the minimum requirement.
Failure to do so would render him ineligible not only for the MVP award but also for Defensive Player of the Year, All-NBA Team selection, and All-Defensive Team honours.
The implications extend to his financial future, with such accolades often serving as key criteria for lucrative “supermax” contract eligibility.
The Spurs are scheduled to close out their regular season with three games, including a final matchup against the Denver Nuggets, leaving Wembanyama with a narrow window to secure his eligibility.
For now, attention remains fixed on his recovery, with both the player and franchise hoping he can return in time to keep his award hopes alive.
