Marcelino Set to Leave Villarreal After Record-Breaking Spell
Villarreal CF have confirmed that head coach Marcelino García Toral will step down at the end of the season, bringing his second stint at the club to a close.
Marcelino, who returned in 2023, has led the club to consecutive qualifications for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. Across two spells in charge, he has overseen 298 matches and recorded 145 wins, making him both the longest-serving and most successful coach in the club’s history.
The Spaniard also played a key role in Villarreal’s rise over the past decade, guiding them back to La Liga in 2013 and securing multiple European appearances, including a run to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in 2016 and the Copa del Rey last four in 2015.
Tribute Planned as Era Ends
Villarreal confirmed that Marcelino will be honoured during their final league fixture against Atlético de Madrid at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Villarreal CF will pay tribute to him (Marcelino) in the final La Liga match of the season against Atlético de Madrid, which will also serve as a celebration with the fans at Estadio de la Cerámica following UEFA Champions League qualification.”
The club also expressed its gratitude for his service.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Marce. Thank you for everything you have given to this club and its supporters. We wish you all the best in your future sporting projects.”
His exit closes a defining chapter for Villarreal, with his legacy firmly tied to their growth and sustained presence in European football.
