What began as an ambitious eight-day journey from the northern city of Tamale has now evolved into a landmark moment for Ghana’s sporting and environmental scenery. The ongoing European Union Velocity Cycling Tour for Sustainability, which runs from 12th to 18th April 2026, has been officially hailed as a “historic and transformative achievement” by the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF).
Mr. Shaaban Mohammed, Secretary General of the GCF, expressed his admiration as the delegation of European Union Ambassadors and cyclists arrived in Kumasi, the fourth stop on their remarkable 800-kilometer route to Accra. The tour marks 50 years of European Union presence and partnership.

“History is being made,” Mr. Mohammed stated. “This extraordinary journey continues to demonstrate endurance, unity, self-discipline, and shared commitment, while highlighting Ghana’s growing importance as a gateway to Africa. The successful execution of this tour reinforces Ghana’s position as a beacon of peace, stability, and democratic consistency on the continent.”

According to Mr. Mohammed, cycling both as a competitive sport and a recreational activity is gaining strong momentum across Ghana, fueled by the country’s stable democratic environment which actively supports sports development, international collaboration, and community engagement.

“The Ghana Cycling Federation proudly recognizes this initiative as a major step toward promoting sustainable transport, healthy lifestyles, and global cooperation through cycling,” he added.
As of Day Four of the seven-day ride, the tour has officially passed the halfway mark, covering an impressive 460 kilometers. The delegation was seen off in Sunyani by the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, and warmly received upon arrival in Kumasi by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

Participants have described the demanding journey as challenging but deeply rewarding, with every kilometer contributing to a larger purpose of sustainability and unity.

The tour continues with the following scheduled stages:
· Thursday, 16th April 2026: Kumasi to Nkawkaw
· Friday, 17th April 2026: Nkawkaw to Aburi
· Saturday, 18th April 2026: Grand Finale from Aburi to Accra, culminating in a ceremonial event at the Netherlands Embassy at 9:30 AM

Beyond the physical achievement, Mr. Shaaban underscored the initiative’s environmental impact, noting that over 1,000 trees are being planted along the route as part of the tour’s sustainability agenda.

“The seven-day tour is already leaving a lasting legacy, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s growing recreational sports landscape and supporting the vision of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” he said.
He further called on Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Chiefs, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and all Ghanaians to embrace cycling as a means of transportation, promoting a greener environment, reducing traffic congestion, improving healthy lifestyles, and fostering self-discipline.

Mr. Mohammed stressed that the ambassadors and cyclists involved in this journey deserve national recognition and applause for their commitment and inspiration. Ghana, he added, continues to gain global recognition, and this event stands as a symbol of the country’s rising influence, unity, and forward-looking vision.

The Ghana Cycling Federation also expressed sincere gratitude to Natasha Mann-Dedey, Co-Founder, Operations and Programmes Lead at Jambo Spaces, for her valuable contribution and support.
The GCF and its stakeholders extended special appreciation to the participating diplomatic missions and partners, including:
· German Embassy Accra
