The Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA Ghana) has announced the withdrawal of Team Ghana boxer Desmond Pappoe from the boxing competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, following a shoulder injury sustained during the tournament.
According to a statement issued by the Association’s Communications Directorate, the decision followed a comprehensive medical examination conducted by Team Ghana’s medical personnel, who declared Pappoe medically unfit to continue competing.
The call to withdraw him from the competition was made after careful consultation between the medical team, coaching staff, and Games officials, with the athlete’s health and long-term well-being cited as the overriding priority.
Pappoe had been in excellent form heading into the Games and was widely regarded as a strong medal prospect, having qualified for the quarter-final stage of the competition.
His enforced exit is described as a significant blow not only to the athlete himself but to the boxing team and Team Ghana delegation, who had been counting on his continued progress in the draw.
In its statement, the CGA Ghana extended its full support to Pappoe during what it described as a difficult period, commending his commitment throughout the qualification process and his preparations for the Games.
The Association also praised the professionalism and swift response of Team Ghana’s medical staff in managing the situation and ensuring the athlete’s welfare remained the foremost consideration throughout.
Despite the setback, officials say Team Ghana remains focused on delivering strong performances across all disciplines for the remainder of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
