The Federal Republic of Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has expressed deep regret over the decision by United States authorities to deny entry to Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Somalia’s most accomplished international football referee.

Mr. Artan, named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Referee of the Year in 2025, had been scheduled to travel to the United States. Despite diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Federal Government of Somalia with relevant U.S. authorities, the government confirmed that these interventions did not yield a favourable outcome.

The Ministry underscored that Mr. Artan is not only a highly regarded sporting official but also a source of immense national pride. His rise to international recognition has inspired Somali youth across the country, demonstrating that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to excellence on the global stage.

Upon being denied entry, Mr. Artan safely returned to Somalia. He will continue to carry out his national and international refereeing responsibilities with the same dedication and professionalism that have defined his career.

The Somali government extended sincere appreciation to brotherly nations, individuals, institutions, sporting bodies, and well-wishers who expressed solidarity and support during the episode. The Ministry further indicated that it would seek clarification from its international partners regarding the matter and remain committed to safeguarding the dignity and rights of Somali citizens.

In celebrating Mr. Artan, the government declared: “Welcome home. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements.”
