Ghana’s para-athletics programme has taken a big step forward after the country locked in three spots for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to be held in Glasgow, Scotland. The news was confirmed in an official statement from Dr Henry Larbi, General Secretary of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana.
The qualifications were earned through two routes. Direct placement on the Commonwealth rankings and a bipartite allocation, reflecting the growing strength of para-sport in Ghana.

In the sprint, Hayford Addai ran a time of 11.09 seconds in the Men’s 100m T47 event to land sixth on the Commonwealth rankings and earn a direct berth at the Games.
It was a strong personal showing that placed him firmly among the top competitors in his classification across the Commonwealth.
Zinabu Issah was equally impressive in the field. She threw 8.66 metres in the Women’s Shot Put F57 event, finishing fourth on the Commonwealth rankings and securing her own direct qualification spot without needing any additional allocation.
Completing the trio is Bostyo Nkegbe, one of Ghana’s most experienced para-athletes with three Paralympic Games appearances to his name. Nkegbe earned his place through a bipartite slot, a pathway reserved for athletes who meet eligibility thresholds but may not have finished within the direct qualification positions on the rankings.

With these three athletics qualifications added to earlier slots won in para swimming and para powerlifting, Ghana’s total para sport presence at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has reached five spots.
That figure marks a meaningful achievement for a programme that has been building steadily over recent years.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow, and Ghana will be hoping these five para-sport athletes can use the remaining months to prepare and improve their performances and make the country proud on one of sport’s biggest multi-discipline stages.
